Themes
I

System change: The transition towards green and high-qualitative steel requires alignment of technological, economical, societal and political issues. This theme focuses on the availability and scalability of technologies, the cooperation within the value chain and the required contextual conditions.
II

Production: Decarbonisation, waste- and emission-free production and circularity demand for technological innovations. Among other things, we investigate the use of hydrogen in production as well as application of electric melting technologies, as well as maximum scrap recycling, with the goal of producing high-quality green steel.
III

Processing: A new production process leads to a different composition of steel, with consequences for its processing. Steel will behave differently: this must find its resonance in new processing technologies to continue to guarantee high-quality products.
IV

Use: Green steel will have different properties, with consequences in the use phase. This requires research into various aspects such as hardness, strength, ductility, fatigue, corrosion resistance, service life, and so on.
V

Recovery: Optimal recovery depends on the composition of steel scrap. Research into the possibilities for increasing scrap utilization and preventing loss of quality is the focus of this theme.
VI

Education: The education system needs to change to make sure that the current and future generation is educated to enable the green steel transition.
