Theme II Production
Many steel companies are exploring new technologies to achieve decarbonization, circularity, and waste- and emission-free production, recognizing that no single solution can address all challenges. Within this context, the overarching goals of Theme II are to maintain the current product portfolio while achieving a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions and increasing the circularity of steel production by 20–30%. These targets align with Tata Steel Nederland’s broader strategy to decarbonize rapidly by 2030, which involves replacing one blast furnace and one coking plant with hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric smelting technologies (EAF/REF). This shift is expected to drive significant technological changes in the medium to long term and enhance the use of scrap metal in large-scale, integrated steel production.
