Theme I System Change
The steel sector in the Netherlands is set for a major transformation, focusing on circular practices, electrification, renewable energy, and alternative production methods. This transition will require a deep understanding of new technologies, alloying elements, and the entire steel supply chain—from production to recycling. Close collaboration among all stakeholders (producers, users, tech suppliers, grid operators, and consumers) is essential, as the shift involves technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions. A holistic, system-wide approach is necessary.
Within this context, Theme I supports faster, coordinated decision-making across the steel value chain by developing tools and strategies to guide stakeholders toward climate-neutral steel. The research uses a multi-scale, interdisciplinary modelling approach, incorporating various indicators to guide the sector’s strategic and sustainable development.
