Theme I System Change
The steel sector in the Netherlands is on the verge of undergoing a major transformation, focused on circularity, electrification, renewable energy sources, and alternative production methods. This transition requires an in-depth understanding not only of new technologies, but also of the entire steel supply chain—from production to recycling. Close collaboration among all stakeholders (producers, users, technology providers, grid operators, and consumers) is essential, as the transition has technical, economic, environmental, social, and policy dimensions. A system-wide approach is necessary.
Research objectives
We develop instruments and strategies for the Dutch steel sector to make well-informed and aligned decisions towards sustainable steel systems. We make use of a interdisciplinary modeling approach.
Focus
What are the current and future supply- and demand value chains within the complete value chain, and what are the key institutions involved?
Wat betekent een verschuiving naar een duurzame staalproductie voor alle partijen?
What are the consequences of the different technology choices and policies for all stakeholders involved?
What is the impact of sustainable steel production for all stakeholders?
