Theme I System Change
The steel sector in the Netherlands is about to undergo a major transformation, focusing on circular practices, electrification, renewable energies and alternative production methods. This transition requires a deep understanding of new technologies, alloying elements and the entire steel supply chain – from production to recycling. Close cooperation among all stakeholders (producers, users, technology suppliers, grid operators and consumers) is essential, as the shift has technical, economic, environmental, social and policy dimensions. A holistic, system-wide approach is necessary.
Within this context, Theme I supports faster, coordinated decision-making across the steel value chain by developing tools and strategies to guide stakeholders toward climate-neutral steel. The research uses an interdisciplinary modeling approach at multiple scales, incorporating various indicators to guide the strategic and sustainable development of the sector.
