Joint Statement towards ESB and Members of Parliament about the future of TSN

Today, a coalition of scientists from across Dutch universities and the National Growth Fund programme ‘Groeien met Groen Staal’ published a joint contribution in ESB and sent a letter to Members of Parliament on the future of Tata Steel Nederland.

In the current debate, the question is often framed as whether public investment in steel production is justified.
The more relevant question is:
How does Europe secure access to sustainable, high-quality steel in a rapidly changing world?
Their analysis highlights that:
• Steel remains indispensable for the energy transition and high-tech industry
• The Dutch steel ecosystem is deeply embedded in a broader network of companies and knowledge institutions
• IJmuiden is structurally well-positioned for future low-carbon steel production
• The transition to green steel can deliver significant health and environmental benefits, including the closure of major emission sources

Steel production in Europe is not a relic of the past, but a strategic necessity for the future.
We hope this contribution supports a well-informed and balanced policy discussion.
